If you have ever had the pleasure of smelling the fragrance of a rose or catching an aromatic whiff of peppermint then you have experienced essential oils.

Essential oils are the naturally occuring, volitle aromatic compounds found in many different parts of the plant including the seeds, stems, bark, leafs, roots, flowers and resin. They are the lifeblood of the plant and what protect the plant from disease and predators. In addition to the intrinsic benefits to the plant and being wonderfully fragrant to us, they also have been revered throughout history and across cultures for their wide application in beauty treatments, food preparation and health practices.

Aromatic compounds have many many different effects and properties. Essential oils can uplift mood and promote feelings of relaxation or provide an energy boost, they are purifying to the body's systems,  promote digestive health and circulatory function. Essential oils even contain powerful antioxidant properties and support healthy response to free radicals while promoting healthy cellular integrity.

Essential oils are used in a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. However it can also be as simple as pouring a couple drops in the palm of your hand and inhaling. When essential oils are diffused into the air, the aromatic molecules are inhaled. These molecules interact with the olfactory bulb, and allow smells to travel to the deepest part of our limbic system.

Essential oils can easily penetrate the skin due to being lipid soluble. They can be applied to a specific area for localized benefit or applied to the bottoms of the feet for a more systemic approach. To avoid skin sensitivities the more potent essential oils can be diluted with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. Dilution can also increase the rate of absorption.

There are many oils with an extensive culinary history that can also be used as a dietary supplement. Using essential oils internally contributes to supporting many health benefits as well as adding wonderfully flavorful properties to foods! When in concentrated form they offer targeted and potent health benefits!
